IIFT Bangalore was founded in 2001 as the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology by Sri B. Vedhagiri and managed by the BVG Educational Trust. From its first day of operation in the heart of Bangalore, the institute made a promise it has kept for a quarter-century: an uncompromised commitment to design education across our exclusive Basaveshwaranagar and Indiranagar campuses.

25 Years of Milestones

2001

Year of Establishment

The Indian Institute of Fashion Technology opens its doors in Bangalore, Karnataka — the Silicon City of India. Founded by Sri B. Vedhagiri and managed by the BVG Educational Trust, IIFT begins with a foundational decision: a single campus, in a single city, with a single uncompromised standard of design education.

2001–2007

Building the Foundation

IIFT develops the academic framework integrating the technical (pattern-making, textile science, garment construction) with the philosophical (Indian Knowledge Systems, Rasa, Shilpa Shastra) and the commercial (merchandising, fashion management). Affiliations with Bangalore University provide students with recognised degree pathways.

2009

First Alumni at International Brands

Design Residents secure positions at Tommy Hilfiger, Arrow, US Polo Assn., Aditya Birla Fashion, Pantaloons, Vero Moda, Shoppers Stop, and Lifestyle. The institute establishes 100% placement assistance for every graduating class.

2011

The Limca Book of Records

IIFT Bangalore enters the Limca Book of Records — India’s equivalent of the Guinness World Records — for staging the largest fashion show in Indian history: 542 garments designed by 82 graduating designers, presented on a single stage.

2012–2013

University Rank Honours

Design Residents of IIFT Bangalore’s BSc in Fashion and Apparel Design secure 1st and 8th ranks in Bangalore University’s annual examinations back-to-back — an independently verified affirmation of the institution’s academic rigour.

2015–2018

The Paris Partnership

IIFT Bangalore formalises its partnership with the Paris American Academy, establishing an international experiential programme: IIFT students travel to Paris during Paris Fashion Week — not as spectators, but as participants, interning behind the scenes at the world’s foremost fashion event.

2019–2020

Expanding the Curriculum

IIFT expands to include Interior Design, Boutique Management, Fashion Styling & Communication, PG Diplomas in Fashion Design, and MBA-level Fashion Management — all within the same Bangalore campus.

2021

Education Excellence Award

IIFT receives the Education Excellence Award for Top & Most Promising Fashion Technology Institute of The Year 2021, and is recognized for Outstanding Performance in Virtual Knowledge Delivery During Pandemic.

2022

Asia Education Award

Awarded by Asia Education 2022 as Top Institute Offering Best Fashion Design Course in India.

2024

Ranked No. 1 Emerging College — Karnataka

India Today ranks IIFT Bangalore as the No. 1 Best Emerging College of 2024 in Karnataka, based on academic quality, placement outcomes, faculty expertise, infrastructure, and student satisfaction. A public recognition that the single-campus experiment has produced an institution of genuine national significance.

2026

The Silver Jubilee & The Ritam Foundation

In the year of its 25th anniversary, IIFT Bangalore marks the milestone not with nostalgia but with action. The Ritam Foundation is formally constituted as a Section 8 Company — the institutional bridge between the academy’s intellectual output and the world’s luxury market.
